Introduction to Aberrations in Optical Imaging SystemsAberration Theory constitutes one of the core areas in classical optics, and has played a pivotal role in the analysis and synthesis of optical systems since the days of Newton. Advances in optical instrumentation to cater to the ever growing exigencies of science and technology have had been possible by concomitant developments in aberration theory. On the other hand, understanding of aberration theory from the basics of symmetry and approximation analysis has implications far beyond the limited domains of optics, as evidenced by epochal works by Hamilton in the first half of the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, there is a current tendency to make a short shrift of aberration theory, and an impression is widespread that there is hardly any scope or need for further developments in the field.
